There’s only one thing worth writing about today, and that’s the impending deal between Google and Verizon that would lead to the end of the internet as we know it.

I can’t repeat this often enough: The biggest threat currently facing humanity is the consolidation of power by multi-national corporations that are interested in nothing other than increasing profit at all costs. These corporations are destroying the environment and funneling all the wealth and power from average people to the super-wealthy. They must be stopped, or we’re looking at an unimaginably bleak future for our children and grandchildren, and possibly even total human extinction.

The only hope we have of fighting these already-gargantuan corporate behemoths is to organize and push back on a global scale, and the only tool capable of allowing us to accomplish such a feat is the internet.

The deal between Google and Verizon which would privilege Google-created content for those who get their internet through Verizon may seem fairly innocuous, but it will open the floodgates to all kinds of corporate deals being made to determine which websites run faster, which run slower, and inevitably which sites get blocked altogether.

There may come a day when my blog could be blocked simply because I’m writing about the threat of corporate power-consolidation—when you won’t be able to hear about it anywhere on the internet. The internet will become like the corporate-controlled airwaves—and how often do you hear stories about corporate power-abuse on TV News? Only when a disaster happens, and even then it’s treated like a dog and pony show.

This seemingly benign deal between Google and Verizon could be the beginning of the end of all hope for humanity—it could be the most important event in human history. And nobody is talking about it!

People, I’m begging you. We have to get loud about this. The only thing that stands between us and total utter helplessness in the face of a Corporate World Order is overwhelming grassroots pressure.

Call the White House (202-456-1111) and demand that president Obama pressure the FCC into putting a stop to this deal before it happens.

Tell the FCC directly that they need to stop this deal.

Finally, send a message to Google, a corporation that until recently has been a strong ally on the net neutrality issue and that used to live by the slogan “Don’t Be Evil.” I’m not sure they understand how evil this deal is.

I have been using Google as my primary search engine for over 10 years. It’s the first page I see when I open my web browser. Having constituted the backbone of my online activities for nearly as long as I’ve been using the internet, I have a strong sentimental attachment to it.

But today I switched my homepage from Google to Bing and I don’t intend to go back to Google until and unless this deal goes under. I strongly urge you to do the same. If Google notices a sharp decline in the number of people using their search engine they’ll have to put two and two together.

Google used to be about more than the bottom line but it seems they’ve now gone over to the dark side. If the bottom line is all they care about, a boycott will make them think twice. They’ll have to take into account the risk that if they become known as the corporation that killed net neutrality, internet users will refuse to use them and they’ll wind up losing money.

Please join this fight. I know it doesn’t seem too important but I firmly believe it’s the most important issue of our time, as all other issues depend on it.
